Our Organization
Asociacion Mayab is a non-profit organization based in San
Francisco, California that provides Maya immigrant families in the
Bay Area with social services and emergency support, promotes
Yucatec Maya cultural values, and serves as a bridge for
communication between our community and local authorities,
consulates, and the Mexican and Yucatecan governments.
Asociacion Mayab is an independent organization. It has no
affiliation with any political party in Mexico or the United
States. Its only commitment is to serve the Yucatecan
community of the Bay Area.
Our Community
It is estimated that over 25,000 Yucatec Maya immigrants reside in
the Bay Area, the majority coming from municipalities in the south
of the state of Yucatán and the state of Quintana Roo, such as
Akil, Santa Elena, Tekax, Ticul, Peto, Oxkutzcab, Tzucacab, José
María Morelos, Othón P. Blanco, and Thadizu, among many
others. In a 2003 survey conducted by San Francisco City
College students, 85% of Yucatec Maya immigrants living in San
Francisco responded that Yucatec Maya is their first language,
and over 95% use this language very frequently at their jobs and
in their homes.
